Kerala (India), September 2018, Sr. Philomina Vengachottil.- State of Kerala lived the most devastating flood of the century. It brought in an army of Good Samaritans who came from all over the state who risked their own lives to rescue the people and to get them back on their feet. The waters rose but Kerala was not overcome. Even when their own homes were water-logged, volunteers travelled around to save the lives of the people who marooned in homes and institutions.

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm: 121)
.

Joined with the sisters of Kuttikad and Varadium, Marie Poussepin Academy, Nagpur reach out to the children of Pariyaram St. George’s School who were affected with the flood. Our target was to help them out in their education providing books, uniforms and other materials needed for study. The Management, Students and staff of Marie Poussepin Academy were able to raise funds to help the children who lost everything during this disaster. Sr. Deepa Moonjely, the Principal and four staff members travelled 1750 Kilometres, 31 hours of train journey from Nagpur to Kerala, to be with the people who were suffering and provide for their basic necessities. Sr. Philomina Vengachottil, sisters from Kuttikad and Varadium communities collaborated with them in the flood relief activities. Other institutions and the communities offered financial contributions for flood relief.

We visited not only the school in Pariyaram and the surroundings but also families of our sisters who were really affected by the flood. It was a time for the families to express and share their experiences of anguish and pain during the flood and the trauma that caused them. For us it was an opportunity to be with them in their pain and sufferings. I continue to ask you to keep everyone in your prayers.

We are deeply grateful to Sr. Maria Escayola Coris and Her Council and to the entire Congregation for all your help and support through messages, calls and contributions. We appreciate greatly the solidarity of the Congregation with the Province of India and our people who suffer.
